LED headlights have to be my least favorite invention ever. I hate those god forsaken things, they’re knives in my brain and then they get tripled by my mirrors so that every minute of driving is agony

there really needs to be legislation that limits the amount of lumens exerted by headlamp bulbs. ever since we started moving away from incandescent, it’s been just a toss-up on whether or not you’ll be blinded by an oncoming truck.

"b but i need it on my truck!!" and the most use their truck bed ever gets is weekly grocery hauls after their 9-5 office job to their well-lit suburban neighborhood

It’s worse for folks with sensory issues that don’t drive. LED lights are constantly like knives in our eyes. Even wearing my migraine glasses doesn’t completely give me relief from it. Imagine just waking outside and suddenly you have to deal with piercing knives in your eyes while someone’s car engine backfires because that’s just The Vibe here 💀

there is, but it's never enforced. I saw something saying the same amount of light appears brighter from LEDs so it should probably be a lower maximum lumens from them too. I think the main reason it's always big trucks is the angle that they need to point over fully grown adults heads at the ground, so limiting non-emergency vehicle sizes would help too.

Another issue, at least here in the US is our stupid regulations. In Europe they have Matrix/Laser lights which detect where other cars are and disable certain parts of the light. It literally carves out an area of light to prevent blinding. But US regulations don’t allow that and instead we get blinded

Also, another issue is that people put LED lights in headlight housings which weren’t designed for them. These ones are honestly the worst. Any 90s/early 2000s Chevy truck that has LEDs installed, are some of the most blinding pieces of shit out there

The rules are actually enforced, they were just designed with incandescent bulbs in mind, and set specific locations where the output was to be measured. Automakers know exactly where their headlights will be tested. With LEDs and modern optics manufacturing it’s very possible to direct the light output in irregular patterns and focus light away from measurement locations, which was cost prohibitive in the past.

Extremely bright headlights also contribute to better sales, because it makes a vehicle feel new, and powerful. It’s your problem if you crash your car because some prick in the same make blinded you on the road, (because we don’t enforce consumer protection liability in the US), so they have no incentive to make safe headlights, and are only encouraged to pass the compliance tests.

or maybe we care about our vision and don’t like being blinded by lights that have the lumen power of the fucking sun? this is a real problem too. i’m pretty sure lawmakers have spoken about putting regulations on car companies for this.

if we only focused on one problem at a time, nothing would never be solved in a timely manner. if you cannot handle people talking about more than one issue that’s immature LOL blinding headlights IS a serious problem if you’re gonna try to send people off to war. can’t send people into a war zone if they can’t fucking see.

most people in the US have to drive to work or their work is driving, many of those people work when it is dark outside. Lacking this basic understanding of the necessity of this conversation screams you have no life.
