Omw to tell my 85 year old grandpa who grew up farming corn in rural Minnesota that I’ve been abusing substances to cope with the anxiety of being a privileged suburbanite

Two ways the conversation goes; “You call that substance abuse” or “time to spend the next 4 weeks running a harvester 20 hours a day to detox”

I would be most ashamed of the "ABuSinG sUBSTAncEs" phrasing vs like simply "doing heroin" etc. Show the drugs some respect and stop talking like a doctor

I don’t really understand the difference at all tbh. “Abusing substances” is just an accurate description

It's alarmist crap. Simply saying 'doing drugs' would probably let you relax more and take less

I have been diagnosed with a substance abuse disorder which is why I’m talking to them about it Not being alarmist. It’s just an accurate description

Yea me too lol which is why I think it's an alarmist, shamey phrasing by the doctors.

Why is it alarmist? And yes, I do feel shame about it. It’s a bad thing to do and I wish I didn’t do it. Don’t mean to be super argumentative about this I just really don’t get what you mean
