Movies on Sidechat | Nolan’s Odyssey was good as a stand alone movie, but I have a hard time truly loving purely because I’ve read the Odyssey. All the characters are flattened versions of themselves and they changed everything just to make Odysseus the “hero” he never was.

I feel the same way about it; it’s just ok but not really a good rep of the epic.

yeah I respect nolan for wanting to make a movie about man causing their own societal downfall but the odyssey isn't a story that fits that very well...maybe nolan was a bit dazzled by the scale of the story and thought it would be fun to direct

They didn’t make Odysseus a hero though. The whole point of the movie is that his actions have led to the deaths of thousands and the downfall of civilization. He is someone who is haunted by his mistakes and trying to be a better man, but the movie never tries to portray him as a hero.

That’s why I put it in quotations. I understand the point of the film. It’s kinda my whole issue. A hero in Greek literature was someone who did extraordinary things, but they were not bounded by morality. In order to make the story he wanted, he had to turn Odysseus into a more passive character. Changing his involvement in things and removing his infidelity to make him look better. It creates a ripple effect that removes the complexities from ALL the characters just to do it.

That’s a good point tbh. I think the reason Nolan did made the changes he did was so he could tell it from a more human perspective.
