He was, at the very least, respected enough to be given the opportunity to make Once Upon a Time in the West. I’ll grant that the ignoring of his 60s works were likely products of the time, but by the time Once Upon a Time in America came out, he was highly regarded in cinematic circles, and it was a very well made movie, so the fact it wasn’t even NOMINATED for an Oscar is crazy.
