They’ve done well because it appeals to broad audience. The story isn’t too dark, it colorful, it technically advanced, and doesn’t require background. I’ve had even my family who doesn’t like to go to movies watch these movies on opening week. Not to mention it brings some of the most diverse audience from big Hollywood films so it tracks. A better question is, why is Hollywood not learning from key areas avatar is succeeding in to bring such broad range of audiences as theaters struggle?
