I think people just mainly really love the characters, there’s such a wide variety of them that there’s someone for everyone to connect with. Most the people I talk to mainly don’t gravitate as much to the actual scifi elements like the military subplots, they just mainly care about the mystery of the upside down/cool aesthetics of that world

Buddy.. as a huge sci fi fan myself, stranger things is NOT “really really bad sci fi”. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it bad, if it were bad there wouldn’t be a cult following. Get over yourself.

You misunderstand my point. It’s a good show, it’s just bad sci fi. It has a cult following because it does a really good job of appealing to a broad audience (people who haven’t seen a lot of good sci fi)(also hence why EVERYONE has seen it), but in appealing to a such a broad audience, the writing becomes a bit more limited

This is exactly what I’m talking about. It’s sci fi written to be palatable for people who aren’t already into sci fi, and that’s okay. The show has plenty of other redeeming factors, it’s just that it ticks the sci fi box on more of a technicality
