Sydney truly might be clueless, but American Eagle is not. The takeaway should be that American Eagle made that ad now and released it now because they knew they could get away with it, knew it would be controversial, and gladly wanted to stoke the flames

don’t think the jeans ad was weird and Notsee stuff, I think she was just saying she had good genes cause she’s hot( at least objectively attractive to a fair amount of people) Why she’s weird is cause she didn’t denounce all the stuff around it

Semiotical analysis I consider essential in film. Out of every possibility, they chose to say this, show this, and do it this way, it’s all very deliberate. The original ad was equally as controversial, even just referencing it would’ve been enough to call attention to the ad I think. Then there’s the way that it was shot/the focal point being Sydney Sweeneys blue eyes when she says her jeans are blue. Then there’s the fact there was no retraction/apology from AE, the reaction was expected

The only ones who thought about it being associated with something negative are downbads who hate white people or are so egotistically driven, they need ugly people on tv to feel better about themselves. It’s not that deep but the people making excuses for themselves will overthink it

So when we talk about the ad we shouldn’t focus on Sweeney. We should focus on American Eagle. A lot of thought is put into Marketting, and even if you could say Sydney was unaware, there is zero chance the marketing execs and team who pitched a revival of a VERY controversial Calvin Klein campaign, with a focus on Sweeneys blue eyes when referencing blue jeans/genes, did it without knowing what they were doing and 100% looked at the cultural landscape and division when they did.
