I’ve coined the term pretentious slop. Now when a pretentious cinephile makes fun of me for liking Star Wars I’ll insult their favorite pretentious movies. Nothing will stop my master plan

what’s pretentious about eraserhead? it’s one of the most genuine and empathetic movies i’ve ever seen, personally

In all honesty the whole point of my post was if someone thinks they’re better or a bigger movie lover because they love niche films over blockbuster or popular cinema, then it becomes pretentious slop. I have a friend who has this mentality

if your friend is outright making fun of you for your taste in movies, you probably shouldn’t be friends with him. that archetype of arthouse film buff is a lot less common than the internet would have you believe, but the best thing to do when someone is unironically acting high and mighty about their taste is to ignore it. that behavior shouldn’t be humored one way or another

as a sidenote though, it’s funny to me that you think eraserhead is a pretentious movie when you’re favorite movie is star wars. surely, you know lucas loves lynch’s movies and tried to get him to direct return of the jedi

I did not know that actually. And I genuinely just did not like Eraserhead and I enjoy many films that are not mainstream or blockbuster. I just couldn’t get into Lynch

there’s nothing wrong with disliking lynch, but it’s very ignorant and dismissive to write him off as pretentious just because you don’t connect with his work
