Film schools should show Within our Gates (1920) more than they do this shit. I get watching it ur into film history but it honestly doesn’t qualify as art imo

I downvoted because I'm opposed to the idea that something isn't art because you don't like its message. I don't think anyone here is going to defend Birth of a Nation on moral grounds (I hope), but if you consider yourself a fan of cinema and filmmaking, it's worth knowing where the medium has come from. I'm not going to force anyone to watch it, obviously it's vile, but that doesn't make it unimportant or not art.
