i just felt it was incredibly cynical, though not cynical in a way that feels like it comes from experience. it’s like von trier observes these big ideas like violence against women and societal racism and portrays them as literally as possible. there are clear themes to be grasped, but none which can’t be noticed within half of both movies’ 3 hour runtimes
