Hot take: a movie being old and well known doesn’t excuse spoilers

I mean doing it on purpose sure but if someone is casually talking about the movie you can’t get butthurt about it

I’d say that’s very dependent. There’s numerous older movies that people know the ending to without actually having watched it (Casablanca, Godfather, Classic Universal Monster movies, etc.). Doesn’t help cultural osmosis is a thing with parodies and references being dropped galore. But yeah, that sucks shit.

What older movies are you talking about?

Yes you can, and it would be valid, it’s unreasonable to just assume someone has seen every major movie ever made

So no one should talk about any movie ever unless it’s in person and you have pre written consent from all parties heard

You should always give a warning before you spoil anything and unless someone is okay with spoilers or if they’ve seen the movie you shouldn’t mention any spoilers

And I think movie theater websites and streaming services should have a warning if a movie or show contains a spoiler for another thing

alright I was with you at first but the second part is just silly lol

upvote 28 downvote

Yeah but it’s ignorant to just assume that someone already knows about major plot details like that

Like I said, cultural osmosis doesn’t help, especially since a lot of phrases from those older movies have become common parlance. I think we can all say we know “Play it again, Sam” is the truncated version of what’s actually said in Casablanca, even though most people these days probably haven’t actually watched the movie. I think people just don’t really care anymore.

But lots of people do care. The thing that really instilled this within me is when I went to see The Fall Guy. That was a really good movie, but the third act was ruined for me because in the movie one of the characters blatantly spoils the ending of Thelma and Louise, a classic movie that I had not seen at the time but had it on my watchlist

Don’t get me wrong, knowing Snape whacks Dumbledore after I dipped from the Harry Potter movies after 5 was disappointing, among other spoilers over the years. But realistically, I don’t think there’s anything we can really do, unless you really want to no-life the Top 100/250/500 movies lists before browsing the internet again/watching new movies.

See that right there, you could have and should have put a spoiler warning before that

So what, I’m supposed to say “oh spoiler: Ebeneezer Scrooge wakes up after being visited by three ghosts and becomes a better person” because I shouldn’t assume someone has seen at least one version of the Christmas Carol? I don’t spoil plot twists or the solution to mysteries in older movies because that’s part of the fun but there’s a line.

Yes you should say “spoilers for A Christmas Carol” before you go into that

You seriously want someone to give a spoiler warning for a book that was written in 1843, with screen adaptations dating back as far as 1901, on the off chance someone hasn’t even heard the gist of the story in the past 183 years?

Yes, it’s unreasonable to assume people who haven’t seen A Christmas Carol just don’t care about spoilers

Dude you are seriously overthinking this.

Yeah, at some point, you gotta cut your losses and figure out time management if you’ve realized you want to expand your film palate with the hundreds of movies and tv shows you want to catch up on, dating back to a literal century.

If the Fall Guy wasn’t going to spoil Thelma and Louise for you, The Simpsons or Lady Gaga would’ve. It’s almost a trope at this point. Look just because you had one bad experience doesn’t mean the whole world needs to censor themselves to protect your feelings. If you watch anything nowadays you run the risk of seeing a “spoiler” for something you haven’t seen. It’s on you to protect yourself from spoilers not everyone else

upvote 12 downvote

Anonymous replying to -> #4 15h

That doesn’t make sense. How is one person supposed to have seen all of the thousands of movies that exist?

upvote -3 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> OP 15h

There comes a point where you have to accept that people are going to spoil things whether you’ve watched it or not. From there, you’re gonna have to figure out if you’re gonna have to no-life a literal century’s worth of media or make exceptions for a lot of these older movies since they’re still part of the culture after all this time. I get everyone should put the kibosh on spoilers for something that came out on Friday, but something as old as WWII is pushing it.

upvote 11 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> OP 15h

That’s simple: you can’t. All you can do is learn to let go and accept that the world will never be 100% spoiler free. The most you can possibly do is watch the movies that you really care about being spoiler free before you watch anything new.

Then either no-life all of visual media, or get off the soapbox, if you can’t make these basic exceptions.

0_o the ending to that movie is so iconic im honestly shocked that THAT’S the first reference they’ve heard towards it.
