I love Wes Anderson. I think you either like him or you don’t. One of my favorite movies of all time is grand Budapest hotel

His movies are definitely an acquired taste and it doesn’t always work for me but he is an objectively great filmmaker

Shoutouts also to the Darjeeling limited, asteroid city, and I really liked the Phoenician scheme

I find his movies and direction style interesting, but they never stood out to me. Could you please tell me what exactly you enjoy about them? They’re just obviously not for me, so I’d love to understand where you come from

kinda hard to talk about what makes him work for me, but i really love how much love for his craft he has upfront. wall-to-wall auteurism. his more stylistic films have this knack for storybook surrealism, akin to something like karel zeman or godard, and so many of his characters feel so personal to me. it helps that he was one of the first directors i fell in love with, so a lot of his work simply lives in my heart.

i’d recommend tenenbaums if you haven’t seen it yet; his style is minimized for the better, and it kinda just masters all of his usual hallmarks. you can also see all kinds of newer filmmakers’ footing being pioneered there, like baumbach, who would ironically go on to collaborate with wes for a couple movies.

I have seen The Royal Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Both surprised me by how good they were, despite neither necessarily being my kind of movies

different strokes for different folks i suppose. imo asteroid city has a certain tenderness and a similar approach to tenenbaums that i really loved, but i can see it’s deadpan nature hitting someone else’s esophagus like black licorice.
