I mean I don’t think it’s unreasonable to point out that some “capeslop” is better than other “capeslop” from a filmmaking perspective, and influenced by other genre films. I think most of the MCU is bad and slop, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier IS in fact an espionage thriller, and it’s a good movie. Matt Reeves isn’t Michael Scorsese, and I know that, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a good filmmaker with clear influences on his Batman movie from other investigative dramas.
The Batman is a superhero movie that’s also an investigative drama, and a relatively slow burn compared to other superhero flicks. I’m not saying it’s the best detective drama ever made, it’s clearly not. But if you like detective dramas and also like Batman, you’ll like the movie. If you’re just a fan of superhero flicks OR only like gritty detective stories, and can’t appreciate the mixing of the genres, you’re probably not gonna like it.
Also, Captain America: The Winter Soldier IS a high-stakes political espionage thriller, just not a very deep one. The politics of “mass state surveillance is bad” are basic, and the espionage is predictable, but that’s clearly what they were going for. CA: The First Avenger is a war movie with a superhero, is it Saving Private Ryan? No. The Batman clearly takes queues from neo-noir mysteries like Zodiac and Se7en.
And as someone who likes those movies, and also likes the Batman character, I enjoy the film and can see those influences. Is it AS GOOD as Zodiac or Se7en? No, it’s not. But it’s fundamentally anti-art to act like studio films under big IPs can’t also be relatively solid movies, and have clear artistic influences. “Popcorn movie” doesn’t have to be a synonym for “bad movie” if you’re not a fucking snob.
