So new rockstars spinoff video analysis channel made a whole video breakdown about how wizard of oz is the most famous multiverse story of all time but I never considered that it’s technically the first issekai like ever

Oz is predated in the “portal fantasy” (the more proper literary term for 19th century ‘other world’ stories) by the likes of Through the Looking Glass (Alice in Wonderland) and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. Dante’s Divine Comedy (the Inferno especially) falls under a different literary genre called katabasis.
