it was so funny that she was supposed to be this local californian and she just had Unplaceable Nordic Accent the whole time, i sincerely found it charming

You can be from middle America and still have an accent if you come from a foreign family. In middle school I was friends with a kid who’d never left Oregon in his life but he had a heavy Mexican accent because his mom was an immigrant from Mexico

her single mom had a midwestern accent, likei don’t have a problem with other accents/languages being portrayed but backrooms is about dilution and generations of corporate america so i don’t think making mary born to immigrants makes sense. like that’s my only real nitpick is it clashes with the themes a little. i wish the actress was as natural sounding as ejiofor
