Dunkirk, Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, Saving Private Ryan are good places to start.

wholeheartedly, double feature; Porco Rosso The Wind Rises both are more historical romance/drama but they both place between WW1 and WW2, respectively! it’s incredible how an animated film can actually depict recognizable weaponry, aircrafts, theatres/battle location, etc.

The Beast (1988) is sorely underrated. Would also say A Bridge Too Far (1977) The Train (1964) Dark of the Sun (1968)

there is also Grave of the Fireflies by the same studio, but i would not recommend that for someone who likes war films. 🥲that’s the only true anti-war film i’ve ever seen and… it’s just a lot for current events over the last year or two. 😅

Super underrated, especially from Spielberg. It feels like it has all of the elements he puts in other movies all in one movie

my [divorced] dad showed me this movie when i was like 8 or 9 years old. we watched it fairly often through my childhood. now that i think about it, maybe it’s actually the perfect war movie for adolescent kids who can handle such harsh realities & knowledge of war’s consequences, especially since it’s from a child’s perspective…
