A main character that I want to watch would be one that is more of an “every man/woman” kind of lead with basic moral levels. There should be relatable on some level to the general public. Not be a lazy bummy loser with no drive or passion. They shouldn’t lie or cheat or steal unless it’s maybe a robin hoodesque situation. They shouldn’t be emotionally unstable. They shouldn’t be a terrible person who most people would dislike.

Popular characters I feel fit that description: Harry Potter, Neo (matrix trilogy), Elle Woods (legally blonde), Chiyo (Memoirs of a Geisha), Detective Carter & Inspector Lee (Rush Hour series)

Even some characters who are good but become lead astray and make mistakes but eventually find themselves again are acceptable. Example: Cady from mean girls. Unacceptable is the two leads from Miniature Wife. Like omg they’re just insufferable from the very beginning. A drunk narcissist cheater and a rude narcissistic workaholic willing to debase himself for money. I can’t.

I don’t even know any redeeming qualities for the Miniature wife pair. That’s the issue I’m talking about. They’re not kind, thoughtful, generous, or even funny. There’s situational humor but the actual characters are terrible. Just a bunch of yelling and mistreating each other. I’ve heard IASIP is like that but I haven’t watched it cuz at least the office has mostly good hearted characters who r just dumb or eccentric not shitty people.

are these characters you don’t like antiheroes or just straight up terrible people? because I do agree protagonists need to have a moral center but I also generally prefer antiheroes over straight up heroes

I feel like antihero is kinda like Venom. I like that series with the blonde guy I forget his name lol. That’s fine because they’re meant to be morally grey or a bit of a dick. The people in my example are not antihero’s. They’re just shitty people doing shitty things to each other and it’s hard to watch imo.

yea that’s fair. and yea what you said about antiheroes is exactly what I mean. people like venom, red hood, punisher etc. the main reason I like antiheroes is because they’re darker than straight up good guys but they still have a moral core and care about doing the right thing.

but tbh I think I have a similar opinion on the people you described in your example. I hate when a story has terrible people as characters that you’re supposed to root for when they have nothing to root for about them

I literally listed examples of the character type that I like so literally not unrealistic at all. And if you mean that character type isn’t realistic then again, it literally is. Not everyone is a jerk.
