My opinion on the situation is that deep down I think Bear is just a lonely person who wanted to be loved by his crush that’s understandable but it’s the way he WENT abt it cause tbf he didn’t believe in that willow thing and played it as a joke BUT ppl or more mad at the fake that joke or not he wished for her to basically lose her ability to love anyone and have any autonomy over her own decisions but throughout the movie there’s plenty of times he’s realized like ya that ain’t my girl
but he still makes comments like when she was BEGGING for him to kill her and she wasn’t in control of her body and he was like “what’s so bad abt being either me” when in reality she wasn’t living thru a nightmare and he just watched as she suffered and that’s mainly why ppl have a problem with him cause whether or note u believed in that u made the wish but after u realized it was reality u forced her to live a life she didn’t want and even in the end he killed himself LEAVING HER ALONE
When he confesses to her at the very beginning, he mentions how she’s the only person that’s made him feel seen like when she was there for him when his grandma passed. It would make sense for him to abuse that for a chance at deeper connection, but at trivia night, he doesn’t use that to spoil her mood or use it as a way to get some quick affection when sandy passed away but tells sarah right away
Even with the way they admit to each other, they feel like they can only talk to each other about certain stuff. He also likes the way she’s generous with the way she helps the homeless man so its more of a personality thing too since its the only cheesy romantic slow cut we see of her in his eyes at first. We also see him carefully thinking through what she would and wouldn’t like at the gift shop with the crystal necklace so he cares more than just shallow gifts like jewelry
He doesn’t even seem to want to take advantage of her at first. He tries to be serious about getting her to stay home when she first turns weird and only takes her home when he feels bad about her dad and even sleeps on the floor when he feels bad when she first freaks out but it seems like it could’ve been just freaked out in general. I just feel like ian could’ve abused that earlier on than bear did
Exactly. I think he did it on purpose so he can keep hooking up with Nikki. I’m pretty sure the only reason he got suspicious of her was because she didn’t hook up with him that night he drove her home when she came to bear’s house in the red dress. I think he was trying to get with her that night
Bear is such a perfect depiction of how misogyny actually manifests in the average man. The average man is not evil, he’s “not one of the bad ones.” But that doesn’t mean they don’t hold misogynistic beliefs or view women through a patriarchal lens. The first half of the movie mirrors “implicit bias,” where men may not even realize what they’re doing/thinking. Then the back half represents explicit bias, and this is where Bear’s character is finally revealed, because he’s aware of the harm.
