The people glazing The Odyssey for putting a black woman & trans man in roles they normally wouldn’t be in are the same people who are turning a blind eye to the fact that the majority of the cast are still white Americans & brits. Where the Greeks at??

i don’t see anybody “glazing” the odyssey for its casting choices, but i’m seeing a lot of outrage for those particular castings.

as a Greek I would have been satisfied with at least ONE or two Greek or even Mediterranean actors in lead roles. Jon Bernthal is the only one looking remotely Greek. since it’s a modern retelling, the diverse cast is a given so idrc too much but it just seems like there was little regard for respect to the culture that created the story in the first place

Outrage is from the normal everyday people who just watch movies. The glaze is coming from the lettrbox bros, the podcast reviewers, and overall critics who were always bound to glaze the hell out of the film for those two casting choices alone

Which is the irony of the whole film because there shouldn’t be any Americans or Brits in a film about the Ancient Greeks & Romans yet they’ll bitch about whitewashing in everything else but turn a blind eye to it in this film since it did other absurd shit with its casting

it isn’t really lol. i work at a movie theater and the only places i hear people complaining about those casting choices are on the internet. i don’t really think it matters either way. nolan doesn’t seem like a particularly “woke” person and just sees a vision for certain actors.

Bingo! It annoys me when people try to pander and act super woke for brownie points being like “yaaaass I love that a black girl is playing a hot Greek girl and YAAAASSSS I love that trans man is playing a soldier” when that same wokeness doesn’t apply to the dozens of white people that are playing characters who should be Greek/Mediterranean. It’s all just so performative

yeah exactly. That being said I do think Lupita is beautiful! Not traditionally the image of Helen of Troy but her screen time isn’t immense so I’m not bothered by it as much as I am Matt Damon or Tom holland or even zendaya (as a goddess of wisdom strategy and war she should be more built and muscular)… Jason Mantzoukas, Theo James, and even Nicholas Galitzine are all phenomenal Greek actors that completely fit key roles in the movie if only Nolan wasn’t stuck on casting his friends

Oh yeah no at the end of the day I don’t get bothered by the casting as much as I get bothered by the people who are too hypocritical to stay in one lane lol. And yeah idk Matt Damon is a great actor but he’s just so big and so A list that it’s hard to really delve into the immersion of the Odyssey when all I see is Will Hunting lol I’m sure it’s still a fantastic film though

yeah I like Matt Damon as an actor but def coulda been a Mediterranean actor but whatevs! I’m trying to not judge the movie too early until I can actually watch it but the costuming, set, and dialogue are really the biggest things I’d complain about based on the trailer rather than the cast itself. Then again it’s extremely rare for a Greek story to be adapted with historical accuracy so I’m trying to embrace the fact that it’s a “modern retelling”
