What’s more motivating when you first join an SMP: - a fresh blank undeveloped world. - a world with lots of cool builds already (but still plenty of space for your stuff.)

I like a blank world with nothing. Much easier to manipulate the other players into thinking that I’m “helping them” by building farms. From there my popularity will grow, but not so much that make me their leader, no. Instead, I sit at a peaceful 2nd in command, helping to establish a monarchy. And then? I quietly help set up a rebellion against it, again, not being the true leader but only sitting in second place. From there, I let the war play out, secretly advising both sides. Finally…

Finally, whichever side wins I fully commit to as if I had always been helping only them. A new leader is established, I was again slink into 2nd in command, and enjoy my wealth and status without the fear of consequences…
