I mean yeah it depends on the SMP. I play on a semi anarchy one, basically no rules except don’t hack. It’s not as fast paced if you just get out there far enough where you rarely run into players. But you can join groups and establish bases with others when you get together. Thats how it is for the server I play in anyway. I’ve played on others with protections and shit but I like it pure vanilla. It depends on the server, the number of players, etc.
