in my world, cleric villagers all take up the mantle because they saw too much. some of them saw into dimensions not meant for them, some realized they were only entities in a game, and some have simply realized the atrocities of the player. once they take up the cape, which represents the curse of seeing, they all get an intensity to them that either repels or attracts their fellow villagers. this means they are either hermits or cult leaders
clerics band together with others in their order to support each other with their burden of knowledge. when a new cleric takes the cape, all clerics feel it. because of their outcast/cult leader tendencies, they either live in grand churches or in airships far removed from their brethren.
there’s also one cleric descended from the original cleric who started the order (he’s the grandson), and he’s not an outcast or a cult leader. he lives in a standard village church, wears his granddads cape, and doesn’t even know how to use his brewing stand he just likes the noise it makes. sometimes though, he does think about the stories his grandpa used to tell and feel a shiver run down his spine
