so the mental health is ✨declining✨ enough that i'm probably going to try antidepressents/anti-anxiety meds... problem is i'm super nervous cause of family history and worried about not recognizing negative side affects until it's really bad (1/?)

You can avoid a lot of the negative side effects by being open about what you’re experiencing to your psychiatrist and they can adjust accordingly. Be sure to also tell them about your family history

Hey! If you have money to spare, you can actually get a genetic test that can tell you what medications you will respond best to!

(2/2) and the whole black box warning is terrifying ofc- if anyone has any advice or tips/tricks or just willing to offer some peace of mind it would be greatly appreciated :)

It’s cheap for America prices but still definitely expensive out of pocket (I think it was $800) but it could really be useful for you in this case

Also your psychiatrist will help you manage the side effects to make sure you aren’t experiencing them! They do check ins! So just read the side effects (or have someone you live with read them) and if you or they start noticing ongoing side effects then you can stop taking it

If you have any diagnosed mental illnesses or have adhd or autism, you can even use that as a base ground of what medications are more likely to help your specific brain. Also if you have any genetic disorders they can help narrow down the list too

thank you :) i think my main concern with that is i'm a bottler and still haven't worked through how to- not do that 😅 i'm sure if it's like- actually bad or concerning i'd notice but it's ofc still causing anxiety unfortunately

while i am about 99% sure i'm AuDHD i have sadly never been evaluated or diagnosed and it takes like- months and thousands of dollars to even get that ball rolling sadly

That’s understandable. If you are confident in the potential diagnosis you could operate under the assumption and see if that helps narrow down the medications. You would probably want an SNRI rather than an SSRI so maybe try starting with that?

true... you'd think with all the research i've done about this at this point i'd be more prepared/know more but clearly i have a lot more research to do (plus the classic lived experience ofc when that comes)
