a guy im talking to opened up to me that he's been going through a lot when i asked him how his mental health has been lately. what's the best way to comfort him? what can i say? im honored he opened up to me about how he's feeling

You don’t have to say anything. Just want somebody to listen to them. If he feels you listened and understood and you said back to him a clear enough summary that demonstrates you understand that’s probably plenty enough.

As a baseline just make sure he knows you’re listening. I’d identify what the purpose of him opening up is. Sometimes people just want to vent and be heard, and have their feelings validated. Sometimes people want advice, but they will probably clearly ask if they do. One purpose can also be to show trust and the “level” of the friendship. Finally, don’t let gender change your response much, fundamentally I wouldn’t approach this different than any other friend talking ab their mental health

Just hear him out. Let him vent to you. And NEVER, EVER USE THAT SHIT AGAINST HIM! If you do, he will never forgive you!

ofc!! that would be just evil to use something so personal against him like that. never ever. he hasn't responded though yet. i think mb he just needs some time to himself to decompress
