and while we’re at it, i think the term bird to refer to stupid people also has extremely misogynistic undertones
am i the only one who thinks the posts (not on here from what i’ve seen) about the islanders all getting mono/stis come off as really slut shamey and misogynistic? like why are we assuming they’re not practicing safely??

I think it more means they’re a flock and flock to men and follow what men say, but I get where your coming from

and if u try to call it out theyll just call you a bird. its bordeline victim blaming imo. we never berate men for the shit they do, only the women for their reactions

The fact that bird has become the new stolen AAVE of the month and is being used incorrectly so much breaks my heart

I mean it’s kinda supposed to be cuz it’s towards women that don’t know how to have a backbone and put men in their place, instead giving loyalty to losers and enabling the “boys will be boys” mindset. Obviously isolated/unhealthy/abusive relationships do not count here, but it does in the other cases like Titi and Parmida, along with everyone defending those girls

i also think it’s really interesting that of all animals with small brains, they picked the one that’s already been used to refer to women for decades…

even when used correctly its still misogynistic

bird was used for women even long before it was used in aave so this doesn’t really change anything

like i already said, of ALL animals with proportionally small brains, why did we choose the one that’s historically been used to refer to women?

Unfortunately the hold that misogyny and the patriarchy has over the world is so prevalent and is not going anywhere anytime soon. That is the most agonizing part about these terms cuz it feels like treason and betrayal against our own fellow women disguised as empowerment.

Bc the term was targeted towards women

okay so you understand how creating a term for women just to say they’re stupid and compare them to animals is misogynistic, right???

Yes misogynistic roots, but its current colloquial use isnt inherently misogynistic (can be though depends on context)

until you find a word that hasn’t been associated with women since the 13th century, it will always be misogynistic

Proof for the colloquial use?

default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #5 19h

proof is crazy 😭😭 it’s a misogynistic term and even if you don’t personally mean it to hate on women as a whole that doesn’t change its meaning and associations lmao you’re using a word that is still TO THIS DAY associated with women to call someone stupid. that is misogyny whether it’s intentional or not.

Calling a woman stupid esp when the most common context is when the woman is being stupid over a man isnt misogynistic

calling ANYONE stupid using a word that’s long been used to refer to women is misogynistic though. just like using pussy, a word associated with female genitalia, to make fun of someone for being scared is also misogynistic

upvote 1 downvote

Anonymous replying to -> OP 19h

i said that second part backwards lol so to rephrase: it’s hella misogynistic that one of the most popular words we use for female genitalia is a word associated with cowardice

Anonymous replying to -> OP 19h

Pussy directly equates being a female cowardice, thats a direct implication on all women. Bird in its colloquial use equates the small brain of a bird to a woman who is stupid over a man. Doesnt refer to all women. The original term did, but not the colloquial term.

lol idk where you got that from. it was generally associated with effeminacy because cowardice is considered feminine, but pussy referred to anyone who was considered cowardly, and then LATER started being used for female genitalia women have been called birds for centuries. and bird(brain) literally just means stupid, nothing to do with women. so WHY was the chosen animal one that was already associated with women? plenty of other animals could’ve been chosen, but THAT is the one that stuck.

bird is STILL used to refer to women and it STILL means stupid people so idk what your point is with that

Its not referring to all women/not used in the same way a term like “chick” is used

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #5 18h

if chick suddenly became a term for stupid people that would be misogynistic too. bird is no different than chick other than the fact that bird ended up getting a second (derogatory) meaning and chick hasn’t

Anonymous replying to -> OP 18h

And the meaning ppl are using isnt the derogatory one, you yourself admit it has multiple meanings lmao

and yeah the two meanings being “woman” and “stupid person” like i’ve BEEN saying 😭😭

Yes and no one is using to mean women now, language evolves babe

upvote 0 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #5 18h

people definitely do still use it and at the very least the majority of people know the association the average person DOES associate the word bird with woman still and using that word to describe people as stupid is still misogynistic. just because YOU don’t mean it that way doesn’t change the history behind the word
