giving rapists the death penalty would also greatly discourage reporting of rape. consider: 80% of rapes are committed by someone the victim knows. imagine you're a young woman or god forbid a teenager and you are SA'd by a guy who goes to your school, an acquaintance, or even a male family member. if you know that reporting them might mean they get EXECUTED, you wouldn't fucking report them. peer pressure would also play a role.
While I, on a monkey-brained level, would love to support executing rapists and pedophiles, on a rational level, I know that there is zero government on Earth in all of human history that would perfectly convict all the rapists/pedos and never kill an innocent. Also once you give the state an avenue to kill people the state can tamper with definitions and run kangaroo courts to execute people they don’t personally like
While I completely agree with the logic and sentiment and everything, I also just can’t make myself feel like letting those monsters live and even potentially feel satisfied with their lives is correct, after raping someone for 7 hours frankly you’ve forfeited your right to life, maybe they shouldn’t be executed but I stand by that they forfeit their life and run the chance of execution for such a demonstrated lack of care for others’
Did you know that that can change? Super easily? I mean they’re already murdering people on the street with no consequences. What makes you think they won’t try to make it a mandatory death penalty for those crimes, and then use it to exclusively genocide queer people? What about this admin makes you think they won’t try that?
yes, especially consider a lot of rape involves incest. rates of reporting for rape are already depressingly low (5% in japan, 10% in italy, per academic studies) and this would only serve to suppress it further. obviously rape victims usually hate their rapists, but most people don't want someone to literally die because of them, no matter what
As someone who was raped for seven hours as well, I honestly wouldn’t want him executed. That means there would be blood on my hands that I would never be able to live with. It also means that he would’ve gotten off easy. I want the man that did that to me to sit in a small jail cell for the rest of his pathetic life, where he can’t do anything but think about how he fucked up. That’s all I want.
And that absolutely should be respected. If any individuals requests are listened to it 100% is only the victims, and that’s also why I think it’s important to make sure we view it less as “these people should be executed”, and more of “these people shouldn’t have the right to have a life to look forward to”, even though that overwhelmingly should just include a lifetime of looking at the inside of a concrete box because I do agree with the logic of being anti-execution too
But I also value the impact that holding execution sentences over the heads of these criminals, that’s a powerful psychological torture that I think, even if not really a consideration, can have its place in a system meant to discourage such actions. That and some victims do want a death penalty, which im also not sure how I feel about considering choice and stuff
Despite this, a disturbingly high number of people are found innocent *after* they’ve already been executed by the state. I understand what you’re saying, but even with our current justice system, innocent people do get punished, especially if they’re poor, black or brown, or intellectually disabled unfortunately.
