“I’m going to change the system to be better” *barred from promotions and pay raises* *isolated and harassed* *witness to corruption, lacks power to do anything about it* *killed for being a minority by cops in their own precinct who “didn’t recognize them”* Just a few examples

Like Jim Gordon is an objectively morally good character who joined the police force believing he could do something good for Gotham. He’s STILL part of the system 🤷🤷

The system definitely needs to change, but not every cop is a bad person. Ultimately, the system should be there to protect human life and there are many people who put their own lives on the line to do so. It’s unfortunate that their counterparts who continue to abuse their power to spear fear and violence are the ones who get recognition because tbh it’s just going to create a cycle where if everyone thinks cops cant be decent people than only shit ass abusers are going to become cops.

not a cop defender at all and think the system is corrupt, but they do serve a purpose IN THEORY. people have tried to create community groups that will respond to emergencies, but they’re not viable without state enforcement. they could make a citizen’s arrest, but that has its limits. not to mention the intention of intimidation as a secondary purpose. yes, bad cops ruin the whole point, but police do have a purpose IN THEORY.

all cops are not bad and all cops are not “protecting capital”. some people actually do want to protect people. two things can exist

Gordon isn’t even necessarily a “good” guy, he’s just on Batman’s side and is less bribeable than other cops in Gotham. Of course, Batman’s rogues tend to be sympathetic when they’re not the Joker, too

I mean he has the best interest of society in mind but he’s unaware of the corruption he is upholding

Oh he’s fully aware of the corruption: yeah he’s trying to solve it, but he’s still a part of the policing system, and a masked vigilante/self-described “rich kid with issues” is key to his strategy

Yes, all cops are protecting capital? That’s their fucking job?

So if someone stole 200 bucks from me (capital) and i decided to snitch and sic the cops on them, and the cops actually responded. Would the cops not be being called to protect capital

If people’s needs were met nobody would be stealing 200 bucks from you. But instead they set up a system to put people in poverty, those people resort to crime, and police get them. Yes, fuck the police

Not every cop is a bad system but when you wear that badge, you don’t represent yourself you represent the state. legally police can arrest someone for feeding the homeless or being homeless themselves. That’s batshit crazy and the fact that it is within their right to do should be an outrage regardless of context. THAT is what ACAB means

being able to assess the disconnect between what the police force should be doing for society and what they realistically do is critical thinking. Hope this helps

That's tragic if true, and I’m sorry, but it doesn't really address my point. I'm talking about the causes of crime and social harm. they don't necessarily stop the poverty, instability, and lack of resources that contribute to crime in the first place. Also, even if that happened because of budget cuts, that doesn't prove I am wrong, it shows that emergency response is important and hose are two different arguments.

YES I COMPLETELY AGREE!!! My example is say neighborhood watches because they are democratically organized groups in a localized area working for the direct safety of themselves and the people around them

unless you’ve actually interacted with cops, it’s clear you’re incapable of having any sort of realistic ideas of what cops do. there’s no conversation to be had with someone who can’t understand that. hope that helps!

It is constitutionally not in the job requirement of police to defend the people. There was literally an entire court ruling regarding it. Their entire job is to protect capital. Property of the state. There is a fundamental disconnect between what the police force is theoretically meant to do and where it is going wrong

Their house still would have been robbed and their dog still would have been shot even if 911 picked up. The only difference would have been how fast they got there. This is flawed thinking. Police don’t stop or prevent crime. They show up to the scene of the crime.

“neighborhood watches” aren’t a solution either. they reflect the same biases of their community. george zimmerman was a coordinator of his local neighborhood watch association when he murdered trayvon martin.

Obviously there needs to be major reform throughout the system, but I just don’t think the solution is to completely do away with it all at once. That’s how you get major spikes in violent crime. The example you gave is one of the reasons that the whole system is definitely corrupted, and is clearly not a good solution to homelessness either (besides the just blatant horrible treatment of human beings). It’s just hard because the system being shit but also being necessary exists at once.

I agree that neighborhood watches are not reliable and for sure have led to lots of biased and racially profiled persecutions of individuals completely not in the wrong.

police rarely intervene or prevent crime. their job is primarily to serve arrests/warrants and file reports. this idea that fewer police would cause a crime spike is silly when they aren't really preventing crime in the first place
