My wife loves harry potter but refuses to buy on brand items because she doesn't want to support J.K. We're both under the trans umbrella (I'm a trans man) (she's/they're genderfluid) I agree that supporting JK personaly is a big help no but lots of people my wife included love the series but buying/ doing things that direcly support for me personally is more the red flag than just liking a movie series. Especially since she has written more than just Harry Potter. That's just my personal tho.
See I understand where you are coming from, especially because of the inherent racism in the text and the obvious transphobia + negative impact on the trans community the creator has. You have to understand though that for a lot of kids, especially queer ones, Harry Potter was an escape from bad things happening around them. It’s not as easy as just closing off, for some, what was a huge part of their life at one point. A lot of queer ppl (myself included) are trying.
I’m ngl I agree and all the people in the comments trying to excuse still interacting need to understand that keeping Harry Potter socially and fandom relevant still sends money JK Rowlings way. Like it’s low key not that hard to stop caring about a book series and giving it societal relevance. The continued popularity of HP is what is giving JK Rowling the social and political power and pull that she has.
There are plenty of lgbtq creators who support fanfics because it in no way supports she who shall not be named. In fact a lot of fanfics contain gay characters. I mean you have Jegulus, wolfstar, rosekiller, marylily, etc. and there’s also a lot of fanfics that contain trans characters. I mean you’re allowed to have your own opinion but please know that people can still enjoy the hp universe without supporting the devil. I suggest researching AO3 and everything it contains.
your lack of empathy for queer people is adherent, we will never get anywhere as a community if we cannot sympathize and show understanding to one another. You never know what helped someone from offing themselves, I have trans friends that Harry Potter helped them through being abused at home. You need to understand that this is more complex than what you are making it out to be.
I would actually argue that the fandom space for Harry Potter does a lot of good for the series in a societal context. It was the Harry Potter fan base that meticulously broke down every inherent racist thing about it. It’s the Harry Potter fanbase that are re-writing and re-shaping something to do more good than harm. “It’s not that hard to stop interacting with a book series” yeah, when that book series was JUST a book series for you. For some people it wasn’t. Get some basic empathy.
Where’s your basic empathy for trans people that see others in their community ravenously defend a series that directly contributes to the stripping away of their rights?? Pointing out a series is badly written and has racism, antisemitism and transphobia baked into the very foundation should be a wake up call that maybe it’s not a series you should be interacting with and keeping relevant.
