
American sci-fi author Samuel R Delaney, a New Yorker in the 50s, encountered the same issue. When he was trying to come out, he found himself describing his experience as sad, pitiable, when in reality he quite enjoyed it. He later wrote about this experience, and came to the obvious conclusion. Language was a tool of the oppressors. By controlling vocabulary, letting no gay terms with positive connotations through, the public can be made to think of being gay as inherently a negative thing.
