The general idea of Marxist communism is accurate, but we shouldn’t glorify the Soviet Union just because of that, even ironically. Millions of people are dead due to a tyrant. It’s no different from any other dictatorship, including the US

not sure how this is relevant. the hammer and sickle is a symbol of communism in a broader sense, not exclusively representative of the Soviet Union

As a Ukrainian-American thank you! I don’t understand why so many leftist especially white leftists glorify the Soviet Union. Like the Soviet Union committed genocide against Ukrainians, these are the same people who are against all other genocides, and it just shows that they don’t really care about genocides

I think people mainly glorify it because the Soviet union to some extent proved for the first time that left wing policies can work. The Soviet Union was the blueprint and we can learn to be better from the failures they had

And those same ppl often ignore the fact that they committed genocide. We can’t learn from it if we don’t acknowledge it.

It was a symbol originating from the Russian Revolution, and was used as the flag of the Soviet Union. It makes sense that it’s still very tied to the Soviet Union in the minds of most people

OP reacted to the post as if using the symbol in any sense was equivalent to romanticizing the Soviet Union. it’s not.

it definitely came across like you were trying to argue with something I hadn’t said. but even with that not being your intent, I just don’t think anyone needs it explained to them that the hammer and sickle is Often associated In Part with Soviet history. that’s redundant (especially when no one was actively trying to dunk on OP for not knowing better), and when you needlessly explain the obvious to another person without being prompted, that has a tendency to sound like condescension

I will never apologize for the world’s first workers’ state, which defeated the nazis and sponsored anti-imperialist movements worldwide. Even today it strikes fear into the hearts of capitalists and oligarchs.

No, we said we can’t use countries like the USSR or China as a model for excellence with regard to the atrocities they have committed. This is a stupid argument because no one is arguing the United States is good. In fact, you’re the only person who brought up the West.

China’s main economic policy is literally mercantilist slave labor. They give out loans to poorer countries for critical infrastructure, and when they default, they seek repetitions in other ways.

Historically, China did this in many countries. You can blame developing countries all you want, but the fact is that they won’t be sufficiently organized. They repeated this pattern in multiple countries, and it cannot be argued that they weren’t aware that asset seizure was the most likely outcome when they brokered these loans
