yeah 100%. it’s js that interrogating the bias doesn’t really happen :/ . i def don’t beat ppl up about it bc then they won’t work on it but as as someone who is west asian (palestinian & armenian-assyrian w/some judeo-kurdish and roma/döm ancestry) im not gonna associate myself w/ppl of these kind of reductive views even if its u.s. state dep propaganda baked into our minds iykwim. they see our 16+ me as militants not humans & it’s a dealbreaker
like even within my own community*that’s actively facing genocide*we’re not monoliths. we have very flawed people who actively work against liberation/betray our struggle some sunnis think bashar al-assad ‘genocided’ them when sunnis are majoritarian within the syrian state. because assad was such an indiscriminate mass-murderer, we have some sunnis supporting the 🇹🇷🇪🇺 coup that literally brought a terrorist back in power who now genocides minority daily (druze/shia/☦️✝️)
Yeah definitely, I’m sorry if it came off like I was implying you were beating anyone up. That wasn’t how you came off at all. It definitely makes sense to not associate w people who have these biases (which is… a lot of people in this country) when you’re a member of the targeted group. I learned some new things from your comments here and it broke through another layer of my conditioning I think (I’m still working through it). It’s just fucked how common and invisible this bias is :(
yeah ur good dw; i didn’t perceive ur comment as such. and im always happy to further show how multifaceted and multiethnic west asia is! on the contrary to orientalist depictions that ridiculously homogenize us 🫠 (not just us west asians are affected tho—africa the most diverse continent is prob homogenized the most—and there’s east asia, south asia, etc.)
