I feel that we often preach ‘sexuality/gender is a spectrum’ but don’t actually follow through on that. Everyone has such specific ideas on what each label means and don’t allow for them to be more flexible.

I won’t shame people for using micro labels, obviously use whatever labels you want, but I do think they exemplify this issue. When someone doesn’t fit exactly into a label, we create another label for them, instead of just allowing the original label to be flexible.

Trans men can be lesbians, there I said the thing. You don’t have to make cryptic posts about it

we have labels that are flexible and labels that aren't and that's okay. if the label feels restrictive, then it wasn't meant for you but there are certainly ones that are.

this is why i genuinely don’t gaf abt labels. if someone tells me they’re not straight that’s all i need to know, and even then if someone i thought was straight tells me they are into/dating someone not their opposite gender, i might be surprised depending on the person but i don’t think twice about it. for me personally i go back and forth between calling myself bi, pan, or somewhere in the ace spectrum and i think that’s just more befitting of a life for me then committing to one label

some labels aren’t a spectrum tho? i think lesbian and gay have perimeters for a reason

I agree with you but it’s about more than that

like when I envision all the identities in our community I see a bunch of rigid boxes with strict definitions, instead of a spectrum that has some reference points. Maybe that’s just my personal experience with the community though.

people do it w being trans too, and everything about preferences/what kinds of people bi people are attracted to (i have no problem with people identifying as micro labels, obviously, but people will say someone is ACTUALLY some random obscure identity because they have no genital preference but like femininity for example, or they're actually omni, not pan or bi, when like, it's fine to say you're bi or gay or lesbian, there's no cutout for what you should be

and when it comes to gender, it’s a social construct anyways so i’ll just call people whatever they want to be called, and even tho i go by he/him which was my GAAB i almost never even think about conforming to the stereotypes of men, whether that’s straight stereotypes, bi, gay, anything in between. i believe everyone should live how they please and the rest of us have a moral responsibility to respect it as long as it is their true desires and it doesn’t hurt others

if everyone understood this 90% of all discourse would disappear overnight lol

Same reason I’ve just sat with nonbinary as my label and it’s usually fine. I’ve thought about looking deeper but I know what I am and nonbinary is just fine covering that for me 🤷
