I always said so many gay people were homophobic before realizing their own sexuality, and it’s so obvious.

Tbf some guys are just attracted to other guys and don’t rly form a “community” around it. I don’t necessarily think it’s a problem

I feel this a lot. I’m a cis man, and I look it. But I’ve fought for this very community before I realized that I was a part of it.

I think the problem is less about forming a community, and more about how they do not care that our rights are taken away and trans people are under attack. The "I don't care because it's not effecting me" type of mindset, despite the fact that it absolutely will effect all of us

Not trying to be an asshole but what rights are being taken away?

Some of these bills were defeated, but some have also advanced. Some have even passed like in Kansas and Texas most recently

We are all under serious attack right now. Bombarding states with these bills until they start to slip through is the plan

i don’t hate people like this nor do i believe they shouldn’t be part of the larger community, but i personally don’t want to be friends w anyone who was homophobic in their adult life no matter the reason

It matters because it’s evident in the way they treat other queer people. They have an us vs them mentality, and are usually transphobic

It always goes like this too like what the fuck?? someone disingenuously says something along the lines of “oh yeah? What rights are you losing?”, then when faced with any responses that actually inform them on rights actively under attack, they disappear.

see these all encompassing statements are exactly what’s wrong with the community. someone can have a homophobic past and change for the better. many people, especially older people were raised to be homophobic/transphobic and if they do the work to fully unlearn those biases we should be welcoming them with open arms.

we’re not talking about people who have fully unlearned the biases, we’re talking about cis gay people who only stopped being homophobic because they realized they were gay and still treat other queer people like shit(mostly trans and gender nonconforming people). and like yeah they can and should work on that but i’m not inviting the guy who is weird towards trans people to my birthday party

And honestly I think the idea that it took someone identifying with a certain minority to stop outright hating them isn’t a good look. I grew up in a very Christian and homophobic household and was never homophobic. Sure someone can ‘change for the better’ but bigots don’t change very easily and I won’t be their test run while they learn how to treat people with decency
