Iowa gay here who goes to a small, local college. Canโ€™t even tell you how lonely it gets sometimes. Feel like I know every gay person in the state. (Both a pro and a con)

Living in a county that has voted >60% Republican for 50+ years straight, these mfs need to sit down and listen to a real small town gay

The massive culture shock when I moved from New England to the Deep South was lowkey insaneeee. Luckily I found the "gay college" of my new state but like... feels weird

to be clear so happy for big city gays being able to live it up but like the discourse and lives they are living is atypical compared to the vast majority of queer people in the US and i just simply wish they would acknowledge that debating he/him lesbians IS a sort of privilege that small town/mid size city gays donโ€™t have like. we all just have to vibe bc if we donโ€™t weโ€™ll be isolated as fuck

theres actually a name for this, somebody on tumblr a few years ago started calling it the smith college problem. iirc the hypothetical they used was a bald cis woman working as a barista who ppl kept addressing w/ "they/them". like yes its a problem bc it sucks that shes uncomfortable, but thats not a widespread issue. in most places ppl who use they/them pronouns are fighting an uphill battle w/ family members, profs, etc.. its only a problem at a place like smith college, not a societal issue

(also to be clear: i hope this doesnt sound like im saying he/him lesbians are an issue. theyre not and if you disagree look it up, dont ask me lmao. just sharing the example bc i think "smith college problem" is a good explanation of the overall issue of "this discourse could only happen in an area so privileged that they can make enemies of their allies like this")
