Genuine answer: transracial IS a thing but it refers to children adopted by a family of a different race. (Ex: Jane is Asian and she adopted by Clark and Greg (two non Asian people). this would make Jane’s adoption a transracial adoption).

They were talking about "what's the difference between transracial and transgender" and trying to use a white woman who wanted to be (and tried to be) a black woman as a "gotcha!" for why transgenderism isn’t real

It was not a gotcha thing either, it was curiosity. I learned about Rachel and wondered what the difference is. There was no disrespect intended. I think race and gender are the same as in they’re both social constructs so I’m wondering if you can transition one, why not the other

Ohhhhh ok, op here: the reason why you can’t change your race but you can change your gender is because race is based on physical characteristics that you cannot change, gender is based off of your internal sense of self which can and does change. Thats the major difference. They’re both social constructs however,

the core difference lies not in whether race and gender are "social constructs" (both are), but in the specific material conditions and mechanisms through which these constructs are produced, maintained, and experienced 😭

gender identity is understood as having both a social/external component (roles, presentation) and an internal, material/neurological basis (gender identity/dysphoria). transitioning involves a material transformation (medical, legal, social labor) to align one's internal sense of self with their external presentation and recognized social role. with that being said, trans people challenging traditional gender norms are confronting the patriarchal structures that underpin the way labor is divied

race operates primarily through external, phenotypical categorization. while an individual might identify with a different culture or ethnicity, their inherited physical appearance (skin color, racialized features) remains the primary material marker used by the dominant society to assign them position w/in proximity to ytness (refer. pt.) hierarchy. there’s no internal "racial dysphoria" in the same material-neurological sense as gender dysphoria can be resolved via medical/social transition.

gender transition works to resolve a conflict between internal material reality (identity/brain chemistry) and external material reality (social assignment/body). a "race transition" is not possible in the same framework because race is predominantly an externally imposed system of hierarchy based on immutable (or nearly immutable as states can change it) physical markers that define a person's life chances and position within the economic structure.

states police renegotiate redraw & reinforce our working definition of ‘whiteness’ (of which race is relational to) through census categories/borders/ assimilation/ immigration/purity /'terrorist'-‘citizen' false dichotomies. its function is a process of population management and administration of bodies & lateral hostility to keep working class ppl fighting while the incoherent superstructure stays intact

race is relational to whiteness whereby ppl are collapsed into an existence that is real only in negation to it; it's rily just an indicator of proximity from whiteness. & it persists only because its contradictions keep being violently resolved in whiteness's favor. not even possible to change it bc it’s a lived experience of oppression from a system that is built on fictitious divisions and no inherent incongruence or neurological reality for race

final thing i’ll say is that is it possible to change it on an individual level? no, but groups like slavs in east europe, irish people and southern italians, and ashkenazim after the shoah (holocaust) were slowly incorporated into whiteness as systemic ‘reparation’ (resolving the internal contradictions even tho persecution still exists) so the same system that massacred killed them in WW2’s series of genocides can continue to exist. u can be incorporated into whiteness but it’s very long.

fyi: ashkenazim are yidin (yiddish speaking jews from rhineland and parts of eastern europe) but romaniote jews and sefardi jews were slowly incorporated into whiteness as well. sefardi jews tho have less proximity to whiteness (but that lies in eurocentric orientalism / ‘eastern’ racist tropes). i digress bc there’s really a lot to say.
