anyone else from a culture that doesn’t really accept gay people & feel torn between ur identities? i’m so scared that when my family discovers i’m lesbian i’ll never be able to visit my hometown in puerto rico again bc of how aggressively anti-gay it is

it’s really affecting my ability to fully be out and live how i want to live in terms of my sexuality because i love my culture outside of the homophobia. my hometown in pr is my childhood and i have so many fond memories there. but it’s so small and everyone knows each other so i will definitely never be able to go back if everyone knew. idk if anyone has felt the same?

It’s genuinely awful being trans in a family of MAGA supporters. They’re my family but I have to either choose to cut them out or have them curse me to hell and back.

the book/graphic novel "juliet takes a breath" follows a lesbian puerto rican, if you'd be interested in seeing a story similar to your own. it follows her trying to balance being lesbian in her puerto rican family and puerto rican in lesbian spaces

They’re still your identities and they’re not inherently at odds with each other. It’s the brainwashing and colonisation that has fucked with people’s heads. You are valued and loved, even if maybe not by the ones you’d hoped for. You do not have to sacrifice either identity. Be wholly you how and when you can be. You live for you, not anybody else.

it just sucks because i’m already part of the pr diaspora and miss home so bad but i can at least visit and save by being with family and such and speak my native tongue and practice our traditions. but all at the extent of being in the closet. if they knew they would cut me off as they have some of my older gay family members.
