is it possible for someone to NOT know that tr*nny is a slur in 2026? I don’t believe my dad’s excuse for saying it

My dad thought the t slur wasn’t considered a slur but that hermaphrodite was the slur for trans ppl. I believe my father genuinely believed this bc I have had to educate him on multiple different lgbtq things. Before me a lot of his knowledge was based on harmful stereotypes about the queer community. So if your dad is similar to my dad I can definitely see it being a possibility. I would just try to make it a learning moment and if it happens again then it is definitely more suspicious

Most everyone I know already knows it’s a slur but were unsure about other terms, like “transvestite”, and also “hermaphrodite” vs Intersex, so I’ve had to educate about those more often than the mentioned T slur.

my 60yr old dad has worked on cars since before he got one and has been using it as a term for the transmission and literally did not know until i was like 16 and told him, he tries not to use it now but it fr was just the slang for that so i correct him but don’t hold it against him when he slips up

I think it depends on how he acts going forward. If he seems genuinely apologetic and learned from his mistake then yeah, but if the behavior continues it was probably intentional.

i've seen people say it cause they know it's used derogatorily but not that people see it as a slur. i think it depends on how he was saying it/context entirely.

That’s not true to the etymology of the word

I mean the H one IS a slur to my knowledge, but it’s more so directed at intersex people. It’s not used for that reason, and it’s like scientifically inaccurate. I def agree the Tword is a slur, but I don’t think older people know it. I was talking about someone saying that and he was geniunely lost by what I meant when I said tslur. He’s a boomer if that helps.
