Heated Rivalry would not get the same love and attention if the story was centered around a POC queer couple

Is Asian no longer considered POC?

The couple in question: A mixed race person and an immigrant that doesn’t speak English as a first language… Let’s talk about the bigger issue, which is that it wouldn’t get as much attention if it was a show about lesbians. Brokeback Mountain, Love Simon, Red White and Royal Blue, and Heartstopper can all become pop culture sensations. Lesbians get jack shit.

(Not speaking for op here) in both heated rivalry and RWRB the poc character has been half white, and pretty white-passing, so i think if one of the characters was just completely asian this story would not be getting as much traction as it is

i felt very represented as a canadian asian living in the states for college by a canadian french asian in a one off show. i’m sorry i guess you didn’t feel connection but i don’t think that should discount the characters poc-ness.

I never said the character wasn’t a person of color. I said the character is white passing, which makes a difference in reception in north american media. And this isn’t about my connection to the character or how represented i feel, this is just about trends in media and how communities of color are still largely divorced from queer communities on-screen so being white passing historically boosts media appeal.
