I don’t think “ally” is a very descriptive word when people apply it to themselves.
Too many people claim that they are a safe person to be around, but really don’t deliver because they mistakenly believe that they have become free of all prior biases
As if they don’t have more to learn. And when you tell them that they still have stuff to unpack, they get defensive and dismissive.

I think it is probably more helpful for people to think of allyship as something that is aspirational rather than something you can just decide is a fact about yourself.
