As a rural trans person with primarily conservative family members, I disagree. It is a systemic problem caused by the republicans who keep getting to be in charge. They feed off of people being misinformed and not knowing how/where to fact check. That’s why there’s a stigma around going to college bc “it makes you a liberal”
I fear that a lot of yall truly underestimate the seclusion of some communities, particularly in the south. There’s a lottttt of places where people have never had a legitimate conversation with a marginalized person. I’ve met good people who supported the confederate flag. Most people like that are terrible, but a lot aren’t and if you sit down and explain what the confederate flag actually represents and treat them with love and respect, they’ll understand the errors in their ways and change
And I’m being very literal. My bf befriended a coworker and one day the guy came over in a tank top and we saw that he had the confederate flag tattooed on his shoulder. We were shocked/ confused because this guy wasn’t Like That at all. So we talked to him about it. And he asked a lot of questions. And he bought some history books written by black authors. And he educated himself. And he got the tattoo fuckin removed less than a year later.
That’s a very privileged take. My parents are immigrants and english is their second language. My mom works 1 job and watches my younger siblings while my dad works multiple jobs (including on weekends). They don’t have the time to educate themselves. I do my best to get through to them, but we’re still living in survival mode. I wish both sides didn’t take advantage of that fact and didn’t use us as pawns
I think you think it’s more of a privileged take than it is because you’re making an unconscious assumption about my background and privileges that I might have when in reality you have no idea what I’ve also gone through and constantly struggle with. A large aspect of my job is providing these kinds of educational resources to people at the organization I work for …
… but the fact of the matter is that there’s a huge portion of individuals that don’t care to accept the information let alone seek it out on their own. Also I said attempt in my original comment for the sole reason that it can be tough and time consuming and not realistic to be reading a bunch of different educational resources but the willingness and the want to seek out the information to at least some extent is huge
