my bi/atheist friend has a very Christian, very homophobic dad who keeps asking him why he “doesn’t trust [him] to talk about what’s important to [my friend]” and my friend doesn’t really know what to say to that. anyone have ideas? idk how to help :/
Ngl, last time my mom did that to me I said “well I love eating pussy. But you think I’m going to hell for that, so that’s why.”

i’d deadass just say we have different ideas of what’s important

You have demonstrated, with both words and actions, that you do not love your neighbor as yourself if your neighbor is gay or non-Christian. I do not find that position acceptable, and I think that makes you fundamentally untrustworthy.

Just get him to survive in the closet until he’s away in college or moved out. Then he can hoist his freak flag

For him to the dad - ‘Just because I’m your child, doesn’t mean you automatically have my respect. Like any other adult, that’s something you earn, and until then, I don’t trust you with my personal opinions or feelings on anything.’

I should add the context that this friend is a minor and that the dad is not a reasonable person whatsoever

I’m worried something direct and combative could endanger him since he’s still stuck in that hours for at least another year

but thank you regardless

I don’t think I stressed how insanely bigoted his dad is, my friend might genuinely get sent to conversion camp (or at least a church intervention) if he said that to his dad. his dad already told him he should “go to therapy” so he can stop being bi

I know it’s a hard ask to find a response to someone that’s this horrid of a person, but that’s why I made this post, since this might turn into a genuine crisis for my friend and I don’t know how to help :/

That’s fair. My mom is kinda different. She said she’s “always known”, but rejected it for a while until I basically said that

It was constantly coming out and that’s when it finally clicked

ah yeah, I can see how that would’ve helped in your case. coming out to his dad again will not lead to any sort of acceptance given his history. sorry for not providing all the right context in certain terms, YikYak word limit got to me 😔

You’re ok. It’s very hard being queer with a bigot family, I got lucky with an “accepting” mom
