For the past year I’ve been heavily considering going on HRT (mtf) but I am not confident in myself that this is the direction I want to take. How do I know/figure out this is right for me? Are there any downsides I should know going into it?

You can start with microdosing for a time to see how you respond and feel to it. A lot of changes won’t be permanent until after you’re taking HRT for a fair bit of time.

the major concern with mtf hrt is long-term impact on fertility. there isn’t any/good data on how often it causes infertility. some people were infertile before starting hrt, some are infertile after hrt, and some regain their fertility by going off of hrt. if you’re able to make peace with that risk and/or bank sperm; just trying hrt can be one of the best ways to figure out if it’s right for you. the major non-reversible effect of e is breast growth, which is very gradual.

There are sexual side effects like loss of fertility, balls shrinking, difficulty getting erect, loss of libido, and orgasms feeling different. But for many trans women, these are either irrelevant or even euphoric. The other side effects would be that there can be pain, such as swollen or tender breasts and abdominal pain. And you also temporarily lose muscle mass, bone density, and fat. But they get redistributed.

I would not pursue it medically until you’re confident. I jumped in too fast and now have to figure out extra surgeries and lifelong HRT to reverse some of the surgeries/effects I got from it. Be sure first
