the bill was disguised as an anti-trafficking measure, but at the time it was unanimously recognized amongst expert organizers that this would actually contribute to an Increase in SWers being forced into coercive working conditions—i.e. trafficking. since then, studies have proven that that is exactly what happened

the bill was “FOSTA/SESTA” tbh I worry that most available coverage of it will be unfairly flattering, because at the time pretty much the only people speaking up about the reality of it were FSSWers and their loved ones. I do see it cited nowadays by internet privacy activists as having set a dangerous precedent on that front, but even major journalists in that niche get tripped up and misreport details

it’s kinda maddening—my ability to stay housed was totally derailed by this bill & related fallout at the time (yes, I am old as the hills), so I’m extremely familiar with the damage it wrought, and I’m stuck eternally playing “source: just trust me” simply because the media landscape isn’t exactly set up to uplift the voices of impoverished marginalized women living on the edge of society
