You could mix and match styles! Grunge/goth is easy and budget-friendly to get into because thrifting and experimenting is part of the culture

Both play with chunkier silhouettes so some good basics would be a black button-down (which can also be styled for academia), a simple black or neutral shirt, cargo pants, a bunch of jewelry (you can pick whatever you want here, i personally favor a more masculine look and wear heavier chains/rings/etc), even dark dress pants to style for formal things, and stuff to layer with so maybe a dark blazer, a simple hoodie, hell vests are cool too

And for making it fit a “male” body, the boxier the silhouette the better imo, so heavier or stiffer fabrics and belts are good places to start
