—history is the win condition for oppressors who would seek to capitalise on our culture and blood. Pride marches aren’t just for fun, they’re to honor those who fought, bled, and died for your right to love. The rainbow flag is soaked in blood and everytime we fly it, it’s in defiance of those who want us dead and buried.
I agree with you on honoring the ppl who fought for us to live such a comparatively privileged life considering how things were in the USA. And some ppl forgot WHY we celebrate just to have a big party. It’s nice to have fun and relax and feel joy. That’s not something we would have if our predecessors did not fight for us all. That’s something they fought for us to have and I think it’s a good thing that we don’t have to be AS stressed about that and that we can sometimes let loose and enjoy
The point is that actual gay people don’t have the be reminded, bc we are reminded every day. The fact that you think we go around not realizing the pain that you claim to be only felt by lgbt people from history is privilege that really angers me. And the fact that you also did not understand a single thing I said and think you’re the hero. Typical the rest of the world and LGBT doesn’t even care to listen to lesbians or how they feel about anything ever. to also demonize me for it. Do better
Secondly, the “distress” you face is NOTHING like what they faced. How many times has a cop attacked you for holding hands with your lover? Has your govt threatened to lobotomise or castrate you? No, you’re legally allowed to love now, the ability to check that “married” box on your tax form is a right that took decades and thousands fallen. Whatever the hardest queer struggle of the 21st century is, it barely the average queer struggle of 75 years ago.
Life. But yeah people should be aware of the history of our community and humanity. That I am not debating. I have issues with you assuming that nobody hurts anymore. You’re erasing and diminishing real pain and oppression that STILL happens today. Those things you listed, being arrested for holding hands, govt castration etc. those things still happen in this world. Maybe not the USA as much, but even in the USA yea, it still happens. You’re just acting like we don’t suffer anymore and we do.
And that’s exactly why we need pride and why it is so important still today. So don’t be thinking that we just don’t hurt or suffer anymore bc that’s so ignorant. Lesbians and gay men still live in a heteronormative society filled with casual homophobic insults and slander. We still struggle to feel accepting of ourselves and get disowned and ostracized and cry ourselves to sleep wishing life could be easier. You’re trying to erase all of that pain and that just doesn’t sit right with me
Yes, we are still in pain and pain itself is not a competition. But we need to recognise what effort went into us even being safe enough TO celebrate Pride. That was from our Queer ancestors’ labour and suffering, things many of us thankfully have not experienced. We still have a loooong ass way to go. We do have new challenges, but we also have ease in other areas because of them, and that needs to be recognised and respected, period.
I don’t think the intention of the poster was to say that we are privileged. I think they were just trying to say that to get to where we are, we had to fight for it, and we should both appreciate the progress we’ve made and continue fighting for a better society for LGBTQ+ people.
For sure, I’m not saying it isn’t a celebration, it absolutely is, what I’m rallying against is celebrating without acknowledging the history. What makes Pride amazing is the immense work from thousands of folks that went into building an atmosphere where we can have legally sanctioned parades and events, and the ongoing labour to build on that. Many folks act like it’s just celebrating being gay, but that’s missing the point imo.
I didn’t say nobody hurts, that’s not what I’m saying at all. Believe me I know discrimination, and homophobia, I’ve experienced it, but the claim from the comment was that our lives are equally hard, which is what I’m debating against. We are so privileged to get to have public forums, legal marriage, etc, and while there’s still work to do, our lives are miles better than those before us
you’re so far in the wrong it’s crazy, no one is ignoring lesbians?? lesbians have done so much for the LGBTQ+ community and no one is dishonouring that. I honestly don’t know what you’re upset about. Because as a lesbian, nothing this person has posted about has offended me in anyway.
