it still drives engagement in the series as a whole

You can engage in the fandom without supporting the author, you can buy books second hand to not support the author, fanfic doesn’t support her, fan works in general don’t support the fandom

You’re right. They just want to virtue signal.

boycotting an evil terf is not virtue signalling it’s having a backbone

Platforming the IP is still platforming her and encouraging more engagement. She needs to fade into obscurity. Quit fucking supporting her.

I’m trans. I do not give her any money. What’s wrong with getting a book at a thrift shop? How is that supporting her in any way? The answer is that it isn’t. If it’s not supporting her or giving her money, it’s not a problem

It is virtue signaling when it gets the the point where we’re attacking the people who ARE BOYCOTTING HER

I wouldn’t exactly call making content specifically to counter her’s while spreading the message to others to not support her in any way “encouraging more engagement”

You know what’s really easy to do and gives absolutely no additional support or power to her at all? Not engaging with any of it, at all. You should know better but you don’t. Work on it.

Why? If I’m not giving any additional support to her, why do you care if I thrift a book or make art specifically to counter hers? If she’s not being supported, there is no logical reason to stop people from doing things like that.

If someone is doing what they enjoy while providing her no financial or other support, while also speaking out against her, what is your problem with that? Genuinely, where is the issue there?

At that point, when someone is actively avoiding giving her any support or money but you still insist it’s not enough for you, it reads as virtue signaling

Platforming anything related to her is still supporting her. But, good to know you don’t care about anyone else because your nostalgia for a poorly written story taking from numerous other series is more important. Fucking ew.

IT’S THE PRINCIPLE! why would you WANT to engage with the work of a racist anti-trans activist? why would you facilitate the continued relevance of her work?

upvote 26 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #4 1d

Because they refuse to separate themselves from her over overhyped, shitty storytelling full of racism, ableism, inconsistency, and bullshit.

buying a book at a secondhand indicates “hey, people still want this stuff.” my local book store tracks what sells used and uses it to inform purchasing decisions (this is normal). used HP copies selling prompts them to buy new HP copies. that gives money to joanne. that is an example of how it works on a microeconomic scale. on the macro level, yeah WB tracks/estimates the secondary/privacy market when making business decisions.

It becomes virtual signaling when its things that DONT affect our right to exist, but people are still attacking you for it because of “the principle”

You can have personal boundaries. Logically, if you’re literally not supporting her, and even actively speaking out against her, it’s not harmful

Nobody can explain to me how thrifting a book affects "our rights and very lives". It doesn't. As 4 admitted, this conversation is not about actually doing any harm, it's just the principle to you all. Doing something that IN NO WAY supports her, is not harmful.

I have no clue what you’re trying to say cause the whole argument is that giving her money which she will then turn and give to organizations that DO want to take away our rights is BAD

And they’re being assaulted and enslaved in Congo, executed with three generations in North Korea, trafficked by tRump’s best friends— multiple things hold weight and importance at the same time. There are Trans kids in Palestine, too. Maybe focus on being a decent person all around, eh?

Ah, yes, because you know what I’ve done and haven’t done to support others. Only virtue signalling here is from you, thinking you’re accomplishing anything. I can and do focus on doing what I can for as many as I can. Maybe fine a hobby that doesn’t consist of being a cremated diaper, eh?

Not me downvoting 😭. The only reason I can give for not supporting her books is the stereotypical names she gives to her characters anything is pure preference of the reader

Or do you mean when I replied “You're right. Both are pretty clearly saying that those who get angry at people who DON’T support her or give her money are just virtue signaling

Lmao notice how she stopped responding after I told her that there are more important things to focus on right now 😂 it’s literally just virtue signaling because you know they aren’t going to invest this much time & energy onto real issues
