I want to make something clear in the most respectful way I can you aren’t two spirt if you’re not indigenous…. I’ve seen the label being used a lot lately by non indigenous people so I thought I’d make it clear

two spirit is the English umbrella word for all the individual Native American identities, which are VERY distinct. identifying as two-spirit is fundamentally a simplification of the cultural identity, so people identifying as two spirit on its own is satirical on so many levels

I just happen to use the term two spirit cause it’s easier to explain but when someone asks I am Onya Daw people

no but you have an actual identity beyond the simplification you tell other people, which is different from a white person saying they’re two spirit and getting confused when you ask which one 😭

Ohhhhh I get what you’re saying 🤣 that does happen on occasion but I’m just saying the sentiment of using the term 2S as a white person just isn’t right. And I said it coming from me who is actually indigenous…. Maybe I could’ve phrased my post a bit better 😭

no no I understood your post lol, I’m just saying they’re weird for that since it’s inherently a cultural thing AND half the time they don’t even realize two-spirit is a group of identities, not just one 😭

what does it mean to you to be onya daw? i'm native on my mom's side & have heard the term 2 spirit but never knew there were different specific kinds and i'm having a hard time finding info about it online but am really interested. can you lay out what the different kinds are, what the differences mean/what it means to you to be your identity?
