Hey guys! My sister is a beautiful trans woman and I’ve been making efforts to learn more ab her and the lgbt. One thing I still struggle to understand is neopronouns. I don’t judge anyone but sometimes it’s hard. Please give advice / educate me!

there’s not much to explain really. Some people are just more comfortable with a different set than the usual socially acceptable standards. They’ll usually also be ok with one of the more usual ones, but as with anyone else, using their top preference is how you can be the most accepting and friendly

What specifically do you struggle to understand. Like do you have trouble understanding how to use them, or why someone might use them, or something else??

Language is a tool, like clothes. And like clothes, some people don’t like the options that are offered by society, so they tweak popular designs (shey/shem), reappropriate other things (nounself pronouns), make their own (ve/vey), etc.

I think like why is what I struggle with. I understand non binary people use they/them but after that it doesn’t really make sense to me. I’m not trying to be rude I WANT to understand but it’s hard. We grew up in a small Christian community so lgbt people is not familiar to me

For the why it’s like #2 said, some people feel generic pronouns just don’t fit well enough. Also sometimes it may be a bit, cause they can so why not. Here tho is where you may never properly understand and that’s ok. You may never fully feel like you understand neopronouns or neogenders and stuff, but it’s important that you respect it anyway.

Also the fact that you’re trying to understand shows me that you’re not trying to be rude here. But there’s a bit of a mindset shift that you have to have when learning about the community about not feeling the need to fully understand. You can learn more and more about some parts of the community and never understand because their experiences are just so different from you. At that point coming into it with the mindset of “I don’t understand this but I want to know how to make these people

Feel safe and respected” is important.

Thank you I really appreciate the explaination. I definitely have a lot to understand and maybe I won’t get everything since I’m not lgbt myself. I respect and love everyone regardless!
