Being Jewish always confuses me because why are my step siblings who r 5% Jewish but it’s all through a matrimonial line more Jewish then me who’s 50% Jewish, has a Jewish last name and was raised culturally Jewish but because it’s all from my dad I’m not

Matrilineal descent dates back to a time when the only way to 100% confirm descent is from the mother. A child’s maternal linkage can’t be questioned unlike their paternal lineage.

What’s the deal with the percentages? You’re either Jewish or you’re not

Being Jewish isn’t about genetics, you have Jewish heritage and are Zera Yisrael, and thus will have an easier time if you convert to Judaism, but the Jewish soil is passed down through the mother and you are not bound by our covenant with HaShem unless you choose to convert into it

So why do we still hold the tradition?

Dawg we practice a 3500 year old religion. We are kind of all about upholding tradition…

That’s a secular explanation and not the rabbinical ruling.
