I once saw a reel that listed a bunch of “fake Israeli dishes” intending to make fun of Israelis appropriating food that isn’t theirs and it was actually a really helpful and accurate list of cuisine that has in historically been consumed by Jews in the diaspora and brought by Jewish immigrants throughout the world.

Then why are people accusing us of “stealing”

I feel like people get pedantic specifically when it comes to Jews though. If an American says that pizza is an American thing, everyone knows what they mean. But the second a Jew claims bagels in the same way, suddenly everyone cares about the roots of food all of the sudden

Because calling a food Israeli when it is clearly not and was not even popularized by Israel *is* stealing An example of Americans stealing something would be French fries, which are from Belgium. An example of Israelis trying to steal something would be Hummus

We are talking about bagels not hummus

And bagels aren’t even popular in Israel, they are a diaspora Jewish thing. So this straight up has nothing to do with Israel

I was giving a separate example that I personally know enough about to mention bc idk where tf bagels are from so I have no comment on that

Everyone knows French fries aren’t American, and when people say it’s an American thing, again everyone knows what you mean

Because jew doesn’t automatically equal Israel. I didn’t mention Israel anywhere in this post nor do I plan on it

Okay so take my original comment and replace Israeli with Jew and it still applies. My bad? Chill

So if you don’t even know anything about bagels why are you feeling the need to chime in on a post about fuggin bagels

Does this apply to calling a food Arab when it’s roots predate Arab presence in that land? Like with Hummus, Palestinian Arabs try to claim it as their food but Hummus existed in the levant long before Arab presence and long before it got the name Palestine
